The duty-free market in Hainan, China is growing fast. “As the sales amount of Hainan Meilan International Airport duty-free shop is continuously growing, the prospect for growth is bright,” said Chinese media CNR. “Since the enforcement of the Offshore Duty-Free Shopping Policy in China, the sales amount of the airport duty-free shop amounted to CNY8 million (KRW1,66 billion) in the two-month period.”

The new Offshore Duty-Free Shopping Policy is to make the entirety of Hainan, China duty-free, and it is part of the ‘U-turn’ policy to bring back the overseas consumption of the Chinese. In particular, the Chinese government installed duty-free arrivals shops in 19 airports and ports, and constructed the CDF (China Duty-Free) mall in Hainan to actively attract the duty-free shopping of Chinese tourists. When Chinese citizens use the duty-free shops in Hainan, China and the duty-free arrivals shops, the duty free limit for travelers was doubled from CNY8,000 to CNY16,000.

Also, they can conveniently shop online without having to visit the duty-free shops in person.” Starting in March, the airport duty-free shops in Hainan, China are planning to put all items, including cosmetics, perfume and watches, on sale.

In particular, following Hallyu trends, as the cosmetics and accessories used by actress Song Hye-gyo in ‘Descendents of the Sun’ are very popular, they are going to start aggressive marketing for these products. The cosmetics are known to be Laneige ‘BB Cushion’ and ‘Two-Tone Lip Bar,’ and the accessories are known to be the ‘J. Estina’ jewelry brand.
