영국 당국이 대한항공과 아시아나항공의 합병 심사를 유예했다.

15일 항공업계에 따르면, 영국 시장경쟁청(CMA, Competition and Markets Authority)은 "대한항공과 아시아나의 합병이 런던과 서울을 오가는 승객들에게 더 높은 가격과 더 낮은 서비스 품질을 초래할 위험이 있다"고 했다.

CMA는 우리나라와 영국 런던을 운항하는 항공사가 대한항공과 아시아나항공 두 곳밖에 없어 합병을 할 경우 영국 런던 노선을 한 항공사가 독점할 우려가 있다며 이같은 결정을 내린 것으로 알려졌다. 여객 수송뿐 아니라 항공 화물 공급에서도 독과점이 우려된다고 밝혔다.

CMA는 대한항공에 오는 21일까지 합병을 납득할 수 있는 추가 자료를 내라고 통보했다. 추가 자료를 토대로 오는 28일 2차 합병 조사에 착수할 예정인 것으로 전해졌다.

대한항공은 지난해 1월 미국, EU, 일본, 중국, 한국, 태국, 터키, 베트남, 대만 등 9개 필수신고국가 경쟁당국에 기업결합신고를 했다. 지금까지 터키와 대만, 베트남, 한국으로부터 승인을 받았다. 임의 신고국가인 영국, 필수 신고국가인 미국, 유럽연합(EU), 일본, 중국 등 5개국에서는 심사가 진행 중이다.

대한항공과 아시아나항공의 합병은 주요 14개국 승인을 얻어야만 이뤄질 수 있다.

대한항공 관계자는 이날 한국면세뉴스에 "영국 경쟁당국의 발표는 기업결합 심사의 중간 결과 발표로, 최종 결정은 아니다"라며 "영국 경쟁당국과는 지속적으로 협의하고, 심사 과정 또한 순조롭게 이뤄지고 있다"고 전했다.

또 "현재 영국 경쟁당국과 세부적인 시정조치 관련 협의를 진행 중으로 빠른 시일 내에 시정조치를 확정해 자료를 제출할 예정"이라며 "심사를 조속히 종결할 수 있도록 향후 심사 과정에도 성실히 임할 계획"이라고 했다. 연합뉴스

British authorities have suspended the judgment of the merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

According to the airline industry on the 15th, the British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said, "The merger between Korean Air and Asiana risks causing higher prices and lower quality of service for passengers traveling between London and Seoul." 

It is known that the CMA made this decision, saying that Korean Air and Asiana Airlines are the only two airlines that fly between Korea and London, so there is a risk that one airline will monopolize London routes in the case of a merger. CMA said that there are concerns about monopoly in not only passenger transportation but also air cargo supply.

CMA notified Korean Air to submit additional documents to meet the case by the 21st. Based on additional data, it is reported that the second merger investigation will be launched on the 28th.

The merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines can be available only after obtaining approval from 14 major countries.
