지난 8월 우크라이나군과 함께 싸우다 숨진 미국인 남성 '조슈아 존스'의 시신이 러시아군에 의해 우크라이나로 지난 26일 인도됐다.
CNN 단독 보도에 따르면, 사망한 조슈아 존스는 24세로 지난 2월 우크라이나 전쟁이 발발한 이후 러시아에 포로가 되거나 사망한 수많은 미국인 중 한 명이 됐다.
미 국무부는 존스의 가족에게 시신 인도에 대해 알렸다.
존스의 어머니 미스티 고셋(Misty Gossett)은 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 "아들의 시신이 돌아온다는 것은 많은 것을 의미한다"며 "나는 내 아들의 이타적인 희생을 자랑스럽게 생각한다"고 울먹였다.
유해 인도는 자포리자 지역 바실리우카 북쪽에서 2시간 동안의 휴전 합의를 통해 이뤄졌다.
존스의 아버지 제프 존스는 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 "존스가 다시 가족의 품으로 돌아와 우리 가족의 무거운 짐이 덜어졌다"며 "아들을 찾을 수 있다는 희망을 놓지 않았다"고 말했다.
네드 프라이스 미 국무부 대변인은 이날 성명을 내고 "미국은 포로와 유해 인도를 위해 노력해준 우크라이나에 감사를 표한다"며 "존스 시신은 곧 가족에게 인도될 것"이라고 밝혔다.
지금까지 우크라이나 전쟁에 참전해 포로가 되거나 사망한 미국인은 5명인 것으로 알려졌다. 실종자는 1명이다.
■Body of Joshua Jones, American killed in Ukraine, returned to Ukrainian custody
○The body of an American man killed in August while fighting alongside the Ukrainian military has been returned to Ukrainian custody by the Russian military.
○The transfer took place just north of Vasylivka, in the Zaporizhzhia region, between Ukrainian and Russian-controlled Ukraine. The two sides had agreed to a two-hour ceasefire in no-man’s land between Russian and Ukrainian-held Ukraine.
○Ukraine released a Russian soldier on Wednesday as part of a larger swap, in which 10 Ukrainians were already freed.
○US State Department spokesperson Ned Price expressed his condolences to Jones’ family in a statement, saying the “United States is appreciative of Ukraine for including recovery of this individual’s remains in its negotiations with Russia" CNN.
