Prosecutors have launched an investigation into Hankook Tire Chairman Cho Hyun-Beom who is under suspicion of embezzlement and breach of trust.

According to the legal profession on the 19th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office sent prosecutors and investigators to Hankook Tire group HQ and other company places including Chairman Cho's home.

Cho is under suspicion of using the company's funds for personal use, such as to purchase luxury vehicles and to repair his home, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors plan to investigate the use of funds, including the scale of embezzlement and breach of trust, through search and seizure of Chairman Cho's house and account tracking.

Meanwhile, Hankook Tire is suspected of providing unfair support by purchasing overpriced tire molds manufactured by its subsidiary MKT (Korea Precision Works) from February 2014 to December 2017.

The prosecution suspects that the profits that Hankook Tire gave to MKT flowed into Chairman Cho and others.

■검찰, '횡령·배임' 의혹 조현범 한국타이어 회장 자택 압수수색

검찰이 횡령·배임 혐의를 받는 조현범 한국타이어 회장의 수사에 착수했다.

19일 법조계에 따르면 서울중앙지검 공정거래조사부(부장 이정섭)는 이날 오전 조 회장 자택과 그룹 본사, 계열사 등 10여 곳에 검사와 수사관을 보내 회계 장부 등 관련 자료를 확보하고 있다.

검찰은 최근 서울서부지검에서 수사 중인 조 회장의 개인비리 의혹 사건을 넘겨받아 사건 기록을 검토한 뒤 법원에 압수수색 영장을 청구했다.

검찰은 조 회장이 회삿돈을 사적으로 유용했다는 혐의를 조사하고 있다. 조 회장의 자택 등에 대한 압수수색과 계좌 추적 등을 통해 횡령·배임 규모를 비롯한 자금의 용처 등을 살펴볼 계획이다.

한편, 한국타이어는 2014년 2월부터 2017년 12월까지 계열사 MKT(한국프리시전웍스)가 제조한 타이어 몰드를 다른 제조사보다 비싼 가격에 사주는 방식으로 부당 지원했다는 의혹을 받고 있다.

검찰은 한국타이어가 MKT에 몰아준 이익이 조 회장 등에게 흘러 들어간 것으로 의심하고 있다. 공정거래위원회가 검찰 요청에 따라 조 회장을 공정거래법 위반 혐의로 고발하면서 조 회장은 피의자로 입건된 상태다.
